Making an Aesthetic
Music plays a significant part that directly affects the player's view of the world. Stylistic awareness is key, everything from retro to realism. Worldbuilding is as important in music and sound as in graphical design.
The genre and style of music can not only affect the atmosphere of a room, but also reflect a culture in a society or the pacing of an environment
Storytelling through music
Music has the power to guide the player to the most important plot and dictate the emotional value of a scene.
One of the greatest strengths music has is telling the subtext of a story. Most of the time the surface of the story is already shown on the screen. Maybe the feelings of a character can't be portrayed through facial expressions, maybe the plot weighs in another character's motives.
Immersion from adaptive music
In video games, you're not experiencing music. You are experiencing a journey with tailored sound that makes you fall deeper into the world. Sound plays a huge part in this because the brain processes auditory inputs way faster than visual. A good quality sound is required for any visual feed, otherwise the brain won't process it the same.
Music works similar. If the music reacts to an events, or gives direct feedback of the players actions, the experience will become more dynamic and real. This is something only video games can achieve and I believe this is the greatest strength of video game music. The music needs to be composed with adaptivity in mind, and if done correctly, you transport the player from the real world into the game.
